Mijbill is to be found looking out for his master at Monreith, waiting patiently he gazes on towards the beaches and Luce Bay where Gavin Maxwell used to excercise him on his visits back to his family home. Gavin Maxwell's lovely pet otter 'Mij' was immortalised in the 'Ring of Bright Water', book 1960 and film 1969. Above pic is The Maxwell Otter Memorial is easily reached from the A747 signposted from the road.

Below the monument is the ruins of Kirkmaiden Kirk, St Medan's kirk, a place of legend where she pulled out her eyes on sight of a suitor who'd followed her here, when he'd fled. She washed her eyes in one of the wells and put them back in. The wells are supposed to cure whooping cough and other maladays.

Also in the photo is St Medan Golf Club, if you bring your clubs you can enjoy a round at this special course. See website. On the other side of the course is Back Bay which is another sandy beach. Parking, WC. Walking to the left of the picture takes you along the ridge and cliffs where there are archaeological remains and ring marked stones.

Further along the A747 at Monreith are stretches of sandy beaches and rocky pools for you to explore.
